Is a chemical peel or microdermabrasion the right course of action for you — and what’s the difference?

Vista Dermatology performs both treatments and will be able to help you determine which one will be most effective.

They’re both exfoliating processes. They remove layers of dead skin, making your face appear more evenly toned and smooth. Chemical peels are effective for more serious skin conditions, while microdermabrasion is a quick way to give your skin a healthy glow.

Microdermabrasion and Chemical Peels

Vista Dermatology offers the Diamondglow microdermabrasion treatment. Unlike traditional wet facial treatments, which rely on chemical exfoliation to treat skin at surface level, DiamondGlow’s patented recessed diamond tip wand delivers a next-level resurfacing treatment that deeply cleans and rejuvenates the skin. It delivers professional-grade SkinMedica serums directly into the skin at the exact moment of exfoliation to maximize absorption.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

We recommend one to two treatments per month to see continued improvement and glowing results. Dr. Muñoz will help to create your personalized treatment plan.

DiamondGlow is noninvasive, with minimal downtime, so you can return to your daily activities right after you’re treated.

Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels are classified based on how deeply they penetrate the skin layers and include superficial, medium-depth and deep peels. The deeper the penetration the greater the overall exfoliation and cellular regeneration. Vista Dermatology offers the VI Peel system.

The depth of the peel is determined by several factors that include acid type(s), percent concentration of the acid(s), the pH of the solution and time on the skin.

There are many peels on the market that only address surface issues. Deep peels are available, but downtime exists and can be significant. For true correction, VI Peel offers six medium-depth peel formulations that make the most impact with the least amount (if any) of downtime.

How Does VI Peel work?

Melanin creates the pigment of our skin and lives within our skin cells. When melanin is overproduced, the skin exhibits hyperpigmentation or spots. VI Peels focus on lifting and exfoliating those skin cells to allow our body to produce new cells that are healthier and less pigmented. The process of exfoliation also smooths the surface of our skin creating softer smoother texture.

Everyone’s skin is different, and the number of peels needed for desired results varies from person to person, and from skin condition to skin condition. Three to six treatments are usually required for optimum results.

You may experience slight warmness and tingling in the beginning, but this should quickly subside. Besides the warmness and tingling, VI Peel treatments are virtually painless.

After treatment, you’ll receive a peel kit that comes with a generous size sunscreen, cleanser and moisturizer for you to take home.

This customized treatment is designed to target pigmentation, acne, and aging. It’s a painless, effective treatment available only through authorized clinicians such as Dr. Muñoz.

Here are some questions you may have about the procedure:

I found a VI Peel product online. Can I buy it and apply it myself?

No! VI Peel is a medical in-office treatment and needs to be applied by a trained VI provider. If you find a VI Peel product for sale online, it is probably through an unauthorized retailer that is not a credible VI Peel source, and therefore may not be safe to use.

What skincare products should I use after getting a VI Peel to maintain my results?

The peel kit comes with a generous size sunscreen, cleanser and moisturizer for you to take home.

Can I get a VI Peel if I have eczema?

VI Peel treatments are typically not recommended for patients with Eczema.

How many peels do I need to start seeing results?

Everyone’s skin is different, and the number of peels needed for desired results varies from person to person, and from skin condition to skin condition. Three to six treatments are usually required for optimum results.

Does the treatment burn?

No. You may experience slight warmness and tingling in the beginning, but this should quickly subside. Besides the warmness and tingling, VI Peel treatments are virtually painless.

It’s my first night after treatment and I’m itchy. What should I do?

It is normal to experience itching on the first night of your VI Peel treatment. You may apply the Post Treatment Repair anti-itch Cream to your skin throughout the night. Avoid scratching!

When can I wear makeup after a VI Peel?

After the VI Peel solution is applied to the skin, no makeup or any topical products can be applied for the first four hours. You can apply makeup after you’ve completed the “Four Hour Post-Treatment” steps.

When can I get my next facial, waxing, etc.?

Most treatments are safe for your skin after four weeks, but we’ll advise you on exact time frames.

When can I shave?

You can shave once the peeling process has completed (About seven days after you receive your VI Peel treatment).

When can I go into the sun?

You want to avoid direct and extreme sun exposure for the first seven days. Make sure you’re applying your VI Derm SPF 50 Sunscreen (provided in your Aftercare Kit) every morning. Also note that lifestyle sun exposure, like running errands, going for a walk, walking your dog, grabbing coffee, and driving, are all fine, provided you are following the usual precautions such as protecting your skin from the sun by wearing SPF and a hat.

Find out if the VI Peel treatment is right for you! Contact us at (210) 698-0500 for a consultation.

Ask us about ToxBooster!

Dr. Muñoz will enhance your VI Peel by treating you with Botox immediately after. Known as ToxBooster, this treatment works together in harmony. VI Peel tales care of the skin conditions that Botox doesn’t address, while Botox does the same!

Vista Dermatology is pleased to offer the FRAXIS DUO Fractional CO2 Laser, the world’s first cosmetic laser system that combines carbon dioxide fractional laser and micro-needle RF fractional technology. This dual technology ensures significantly improved skin quality and texture through intense superficial stimulation, increased volumetric heating and deeper heat diffusion.

This safe and highly advanced procedure can be used to treat both the face and body and promotes the reduction of wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation, acne scars, uneven texture, pore size, stretch marks…and more.

Here are some commonly asked questions about the treatment.

What are the benefits of this procedure?

If you have skin imperfections or progressive signs of aging, the FRAXIS DUO Fractional CO2 Laser treatment is a viable alternative to invasive surgical procedures that typically cost more and involve longer down times. Patients who undergo this procedure can expect skin that becomes increasingly smoother, clearer, and more rejuvenated after the treatment. FRAXIS is designed to treat and reduce the appearance of the following:

Severe signs of sun damage

Deeper fine lines and wrinkles

Scarring from acne or surgery

Skin irregularities like warts and moles

Enlarged pores

Age spots

Uneven skin tone

What are the benefits?

This treatment is highly effective for a wide variety of applications and can treat multiple skin concerns in one session. With the added benefit of the micro-needle RF, this brand-new technology offers the following benefits:

Improved skin tone and texture

Significantly reduced wrinkles

Firmer, lifted skin

Pore size reduction

Smoother, younger-looking skin

How do I get started?

The initial consultation is the first and most important step of undergoing this procedure. It gives you the opportunity to get to know Dr. Muñoz and the treatments she offers. Similarly, consultations allow us to learn more about you, your specific cosmetic concerns, and your expectations of the treatment. This is so we can develop the right treatment plan that can safely and effectively achieve your desired outcome. The consultation will also involve the following:

Interview about your medical history

A thorough examination of the target areas

What can I expect?

A topical anesthetic will be applied to your entire face or specific target areas. Alternatively, an inhaled analgesia (Pro-Nox) may be used, depending on your anesthetic needs and the extent of the treatment.

We will then begin by making several passes on sections of your face or specific target areas with both the fractional laser and micro-needle hand pieces. Heat and tingling sensations can be expected as the laser moves across the skin.

Depending on the size of the target areas, the procedure may take anywhere between 30 to 90 minutes. For a full face treatment, the treatment can last up to two hours.

What is the recovery time?

Immediately after the procedure, treated areas will be red and warm to the touch. Ice packs or a cold compress may be applied for five to 10 minutes per hour during the first five to six hours post-treatment in order to ease discomfort. A thick topical gel may be prescribed to protect and speed up the healing process, and you may be advised to avoid showering for the first few days.

It will take about three to 14 days to shed dead skin and heal completely. For four to six weeks after the treatment, the treated areas will remain pinkish and slightly blotchy. While your skin will already start to show noticeable improvements after the initial recovery, the final results will be revealed in about three to six months.

If you think you’d benefit from a FRAXIS DUO treatment, contact Vista Dermatology for a consultation.

The FRAXIS DUO Fractional CO2 Laser is the world’s first cosmetic laser system that combines carbon dioxide fractional laser and micro-needle RF fractional technology. This dual technology ensures significantly improved skin quality and texture through intense superficial stimulation, increased volumetric heating, and deeper heat diffusion. This safe and highly-advanced procedure can be used to treat both the face and body and promotes the reduction of wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, uneven texture, pore size, stretch marks and more.

WHY SHOULD I UNDERGO THIS PROCEDURE?

If you’re exhibiting skin imperfections or progressive signs of aging, the FRAXIS DUO Fractional CO2 Laser treatment is a viable alternative to invasive surgical procedures that typically cost more and involve longer downtimes. Patients who undergo this procedure can expect skin that becomes increasingly smoother, clearer, and more rejuvenated after the treatment. FRAXIS is designed to treat and reduce the appearance of the following:

Severe signs of sun damage

Deeper fine lines and wrinkles

Scarring from acne or surgery

Skin irregularities like warts and moles

Enlarged pores

Age spots

Uneven skin tone

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Unlike other laser treatments available, this machine compounds fractional CO2 laser and micro-needling with radiofrequency to create a skin rejuvenation powerhouse.

This treatment is highly effective for a wide variety of applications and can treat multiple skin concerns in one session. With the added benefit of the micro-needle RF, this brand-new technology offers the following benefits:

Improved skin tone and texture

Significantly reduced wrinkles

Firmer, lifted skin

Pore size reduction

Smoother, younger-looking skin

HOW IS IT PERFORMED?

The fractional CO2 laser emits fractionated beams of light that create controlled thermal damage that will be healed by the surrounding tissues naturally, while the micro-needles promote more significant improvement by delivering precisely controlled RF energy at different depths of the dermis and encouraging collagen remodeling within the skin.

We will first apply a topical anesthetic on your entire face or specific target areas and wait until it is sufficiently numb. Alternatively, a sedative may also be used, depending on your anesthetic needs and the extent of the treatment.

We will then begin by making several passes on sections of your face or specific target areas with both the fractional laser and micro-needle handpieces. Heat and tingling sensations can be expected as the laser moves across the skin.

Depending on the size of the target areas, the procedure may take anywhere between 15 to 45 minutes. For a full face treatment, it can last up to two hours.

Find out if the FRAXIS DUO Fractional CO2 Laser treatment is right for you. Contact us at (210) 698-0500 for a consultation.

Your skin is your first layer of defense against the outside world. It can also give you important clues about your overall health.

Take good care of your skin — so that your skin can keep taking good care of you.

Skin protects your body in many ways

Your skin acts as a barrier to protect your body from invasion by bacteria and other possible environmental hazards that can be dangerous to your health. It provides other services, too. It contains nerve endings that let you feel when an object is too hot or sharp so that you can quickly pull away.

Sweat glands and tiny blood vessels in your skin help to control your body temperature. And cells in your skin turn sunlight into vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones.

Skin can also alert you to a health problem

A red, itchy rash might signal allergies or infections, and a red “butterfly” rash on your face might be a sign of lupus. A yellow tint might indicate liver disease. Dark or unusual moles might be warning signs of skin cancer. Be mindful for unexpected changes to your skin and talk with your doctor if you have concerns.

Your skin can become too dry if you don’t drink enough fluids or spend too much time in sunny or dry conditions. To treat dry skin, use moisturizing creams or lotions, and use warm (instead of hot) water when you bathe and wash your hands. You can also try using a humidifier to make the air in your home less dry.

The sun can damage your skin as well. Sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) light that causes sunburn and makes your skin age faster, leading to more wrinkles as you get older. There’s also a strong link between UV exposure and skin cancer. Protect your skin from the sun by wearing hats and other protective clothing. Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30, and restrict your time in the sun during the late morning and early afternoon hours, when sunlight is strongest.

What’s living on your skin?

Skin researchers are studying the skin’s microbiome — the bacteria and other microscopic organisms that live on your skin. Some of these microbes can be helpful. Evidence suggests that they boost the body’s infection-fighting immune system and help keep you healthy. Certain microbes, however, are associated with skin diseases. The scientists are trying to find ways to support healthy skin microbes while reducing the harmful ones.

Vista Dermatology’s Dr. Karla Muñoz says, “Foods such as fish, eggs, milk and fortified orange juice are good sources of vitamin D. You may also want to take a vitamin D 800 IU supplement daily.”

Remember these skincare tips:

Wash up. Bathe in warm — not hot — water. Use mild cleansers that don’t irritate. Wash gently; don’t scrub.

Avoid sun damage. Avoid intense sun exposure, use sunscreen, and wear protective clothing.

Never use tanning beds or sunlamps. They emit the same harmful UV radiation as the sun.

Keep your skin hydrated. Drink plenty of water, and use gentle moisturizers, lotions, or creams.

Don’t stress out. Stress can harm your skin and other body systems.

Get enough sleep. Experts recommend about nine hours a night for teens and seven to eight hours for adults.

Eat right. A diet rich in vitamins and nutrients benefits your skin.

Speak up. Talk to your doctor if you notice any odd changes to your skin, like a rash or mole that changes size or color.

What is winter itch?

Winter itch, also known as pruritus hiemalis, is a type of dermatitis that can affect you most during cold weather. It can affect any part of the body (except the hands, face, feet and scalp), but it is most common on the legs.

Asteatotic eczema is another form of winter itch, and it has similar symptoms.

What are the symptoms?

Since the skin is rough, dry and irritated, constant scratching is a primary symptom, leading to even rougher skin and even visible scratch marks. Without treatment, these symptoms can become even more intense.

It is most noticeable at night and can be especially irritating when you’re changing your clothes.

What causes it?

Although its cause is not completely known, cold and dry weather seems to be a factor (hence the name), as well as certain types of coarse clothing such as wool.

Heat can also be a culprit, as wintertime heating also reduces the moisture in your home.

When it’s cold outside, some people (especially those with poor circulation) use portable heaters to keep body parts warm. “Keep space heaters at a distance rather than directly on your lower legs,” advises Vista Dermatology’s Dr. Karla Muñoz.

Who gets it?

Both men and women can be afflicted, particularly older people with drier skin. Children and adolescents seldom are affected, however.

How is it treated?

Less severe symptoms of winter itch can be treated at home, with the overall goal being to alleviate discomfort and stop the scratching.

Try taking a warm bath with a quarter-cup of baking soda blended into it before bedtime. It will help with the itch and give the added benefit of relaxing you for sleep. Don’t forget to moisturize.

Dr. Munoz adds, “Reduce the temperature and frequency of your hot showers. Pat dry with a towel, then apply a ceramide-based over-the-counter cream within a few minutes of getting out of the shower. I also think a water softener helps if you are prone to dry, itchy skin. ”

“Use an over-the-counter hydrocortisone 1% cream in addition to your moisturizer,” she recommends. “Also, try to wear 100% cotton fabrics and switch to a fragrance-free laundry detergent.”

If your symptoms (and scratching) persist or worsen, make an appointment with Dr. Muñoz for further professional treatment.
